Best Fish

Rocky Mountain National Park is the headwaters for the Colorado, Big Thompson, Cache la Poudre, and Fall Rivers. The upper reaches and tributaries of these rivers provide pristine high-country habitat for native and non-native fish. The two iconic native fish in Rocky Mountain National Park are the greenback cutthroat trout and the Colorado River cutthroat trout.

Greenback Cutthroat Trout

Oncorhynchus clarki stomias

Agricultural water diversion, mining sediment runoff, and overfishing almost destroyed all populations of the greenback cutthroat. Then a pure strain was discovered in 1973. Brought back from extinction, it now occupies less than 1 percent of its historical range. The greenback cutthroat trout was selected in 1984 as the Colorado state fish.
